Faithful in the Small Things

“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” — Matthew 25:21

We live in a day that prizes the spectacular, but the Lord’s economy runs differently. The master in this parable doesn’t commend his servant for doing something great — he commends him for being faithful, and faithful over “a few things.” Faithfulness rarely looks impressive. It looks like showing up to pray when you don’t feel like it, keeping your word on a small promise nobody would notice if broken, serving in the nursery or teaching the same class year after year. Unglamorous, repetitive — and exactly what God is watching for. As Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Harvest doesn’t come the day you plant; faithfulness is long obedience, not a single act.

So take heart: God is not asking you to be spectacular. He is asking you to be faithful, today, in the small assignment in front of you. Whatever “few things” the Lord has placed in your hands this week — a conversation, a responsibility, a quiet act of obedience nobody will applaud — do it as unto Him. The reward isn’t a bigger platform. The reward is Him. “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” — Revelation 2:10
