Memorial Day Cookout – This Sunday After Service

One of the greatest dangers facing the local church today is that we have reduced Christianity to a Sunday morning event. We gather, we worship, we hear the Word — and then we scatter back to our separate lives until next week. But the New Testament knows nothing of that kind of Christianity. The early church didn’t just meet in the temple courts on the appointed day; they were in one another’s homes, breaking bread together, sharing their lives, bearing one another’s burdens. Galatians 6:2 commands us, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” That kind of fellowship isn’t a program you can schedule — it’s a relationship you have to cultivate. And it happens between the Sundays.

You cannot truly know the people sitting in the pew beside you by seeing them an hour or two a week. You learn who a person really is when you sit at their kitchen table, when you pray with them through a hard season, when you show up on a Tuesday just because you were thinking about them. Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us to consider “one another to provoke unto love and to good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together… but exhorting one another.” That exhortation goes far beyond the church building — it’s a daily call to invest in the lives of our brothers and sisters. Proverbs 17:17 reminds us that “a friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” That’s the kind of church family God intended — not a crowd of familiar strangers, but a covenant people who are genuinely, practically, lovingly woven into each other’s lives. The Sunday service matters deeply — but the Christian life is lived every day of the week.
